Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

Update time! big_smile
Don't forget to get the pack from post #1 if you haven't, and applying earlier updates before adding this pack.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20216605/SD%20d … 202011.zip

News:

[wip] Inventory! (basic functionality, items work, picking them up needs some work)
Enemy ninjas revamped (4 different types)
Special attacks are now obtained by completing the master's quests
[wip] Expanded some areas and built more interiors
Some graphic tweaks (covering gaps, adding details, the usual)
Added configurable transparency and particle effects (for older cpu)
Reviewed size and placement of text in dialogs.
[wip] overhauling the tutorial, it's playable but does not end. now the menu and AI work in the tutorial.
fixed a lot of small bugs that broke gameplay or were annoying.

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

hopefully in time, yes smile

almost all we planned for 0.3 is done, even if in basic forms. We believe that this is the first true SD prototype because as a game, it completely gained a personality of its own. We also hope that it one day serves as a "sub-engine" for people wanting to create the same kind of game.

haven't had free time to play it on the latest few days. I'm downloading now, and I'll post an opinion here soon!

I've been watching the videos, and the gameplay seems to be very nice.

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

it won't work on Linux:

nanoparser error! Preprocessor error in "/home/alex/Desktop/jogar SD/SD 0.3 RELEASE/objects/include_list.obj" on line 46: couldn't include file "/home/alex/Desktop/jogar SD/SD 0.3 RELEASE/objects/Animals/ANIMAL_O_Kaeru.inc".

I think it's a case-sensitive/insensitive issue. I'll keep trying.

edit: just replace all occurrences of "Animals" at objects/include_list.obj to "animals" and it will work.

edit 2: is there a way to disable the day/night system, or at least make it dithered? Compared to this video, the game in my computer is much slower, even in 320x240 full screen. (in fact, since the day/night system it's always been slower than the video. my computer is a dell mini 9, a netbook, so, i'm at fault here tongue...)

in the meanwhile i'll try playing on my father's computer, which is better than mine.

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

thanks for reporting your performance issues. we haven't had a chance to test on anything lower than P4 1.5 GHz / 512 MB RAM.
We can indeed disable the weather system or even dither it, in fact, the plan is to remake it when we can use change_background or similar commands.

if you really lag because of it, in objects/default_startup/environment.inc there are two objects called ".bg_light_fx" and ".light_fx" which you can edit, or simply comment them out from the default_startup.obj

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

yes, i really lag. playing on a computer other than mine feels much better, though smile

I played on a faster computer, and the evolution since 0.2 has been substantial. Very nice, feels like an immersive game. It was fun to play! I reached level 12 (and lv2 with Betto) and cleared the Bamboo and the Stone Mine dungeons. After that the Lord said about a river/sabotage quest, but I guess that hasn't been implemented yet. I also couldn't clear Sensei's second quest (deflect 100 shurikens), though I think I did deflect those.

there are some bugs the you might not know about:

1. there is some very unfair invisible pitfall at bamboo forest, going to the right at the entrance to the bamboo fort.

2. i had to defeat the boss from dragon chamber twice. after defeating the boss for the first time, but while still in the chamber, you only control michio in that screen. Try switching. You'll switch to betto, but betto is not there. The game freezes. I freaked out thinking I lost my progress, but then I cheated with the level editor and managed to go back to stone mine. The enemies got alive again, and so did the boss.

bugs aside, my playing hours were very fun and challenging. thanks for that.

congratulations to the entire SD team. looking forward for the new versions. this will become a great game some day. smile

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

Thank you Alex, but we really want to congratulate you too, because your engine allows so much. If we did the game in another engine, it would surely feel different and lose part of what makes it be what it is.

Also, exploring the engine this much is always a good thing because it shows us how much can and can not be done.
While the engine itself was conceived with a game type in mind, it is also a good base for more complex creations.

on other topics,

0.3A is out tongue

you should notice some more performance in water areas, and i believe it can be improved further

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

i'm sorry for double posting, but the previous post is over one month old.

I don't know how many people are awaiting v0.4, but i want to make something clear:

Even though development seems (and it is) halted, the project is not dead.

lunarrush is working with team Fracture in the meantime. They are prototyping a game with Open Surge Engine, which will see an early alpha released soon. Sorry, i can't detail more, even though i'm somewhat involved in the project, i won't leak. I'm not the person to do the announcements.

I am, on the other hand, learning UDK, head-on and full speed, which consumes all my free time at the moment. But it is for the good. In less than a month I was able to create an early prototype of what SD would be in 3D. I have not yet decided if the movement should be a totally free, or restricted to side-scrolling, or maybe blending both and do separate gameplay types or different levels.

Regarding the Open Surge version, I'd like to remind everyone: It is Open Source. You are free to modify the game however and how much you like. You can even use the scripted sub-engines (the RPG system and its modules) to create a new game. Nobody is going to knock your door with a C&D letter, as long as you don't use and distribute copyrighted content.

Regarding the 3D version, if you haven't seen it:

this is how it looked yesterday:

great%20view.jpg

and last week:

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

too bad the 2D version is going to be abandoned, but I wish Team SD the best with UDK smile SD is a promising project since day one and the video is looking very nice. smile

maybe you could keep the 2D version available for new downloads even if a 3D one exists?

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

it's not abandoned, but there is no active development at the moment, and there won't be for a while.

The plan is to keep the 2D version and work it until finished. This is a free game and will always be, but won't be much of a game until it's actually complete.

UDK however, presents industry standard 3D graphics, configurable physics, and is a great tool for indie developers to make commercial games, which is how i would like to fund my life in the future tongue

It's a pretty long shot but there's nothing to lose. even the people who only build levels earn good money doing freelance jobs.

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

oh, i misunderstood it. sorry! I thought 0.4 would no longer be 2d.

regarding industry-standards game engines for commercial games, tools like Unity and UDK are indeed pretty famous nowadays. You could work on and sell your own games, do freelance jobs for others, explore social networks, etc. In any case, it's a tough path. Still, there must be a way for indies to make good money - with good probability - out of it, as there are so many people out there playing games! What do you think?

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

I believe the toughest parts are having a good and varied portfolio, and getting the first jobs when you don't have much work and people's feedback to show. Not to mention the learning process, which can be a long road if there are no courses or workshops to attend. Blessed is Youtube and community forums, for there are lots of tutorials. In this, i think UDK really sucks. The documentation is poor, very generic, and there aren't many open source packages from where to start learning by modding.

Paid jobs are always popping up, at least in the UDK forums they seem to be frequent. As for making money with your own game, UDK makes it possible under some conditions:

- Not using any of the bundled Unreal Tournament Demo assets (including scripts)
- The basic free license shows a UDK splash screen at the game start
- Profit over a certain value requires you to pay royalties to Epic Games

Unity is the lighter side. While slightly less powerful as UDK, general opinions tell that it is better documented, the community support is better, and is easier to work with. I might be biased, but i disagree of the last. Unity's interface didn't seem very intuitive.

Speaking of money and engines, the greatest money tree seems to be growing in iOS, so, virtually any engine with iOS support (Unity and UDK have it) can earn you good money if you make a game that sells. The only drawback in Unity is that you get the free PC license, and have to pay separately for each console/phone license (around 4000 USD each), while in UDK you can bake contents to any supported device, right out of the box, with only the mandatory splash screen.

Unity suggests, however, that you start with PC games, and buy the other licenses as you sell your games.

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

Quick update:

SD's front page now contains some information about Open Surge and contains links to diverse areas of this site (wiki, source, bleeding edge and forums)

i'm hoping this will not only interest people in modding SD and OS, but will also bring more people into our communities.

UDK version is on hold because i want to give everyone a nice christmas present tongue

Debugging and optimizing SD2D where possible. we're hoping to boost at least 20% more performance on weaker machines. This will be turned possible not entirely because of, but in conjuntion with a stealth system based on sounds, visions, and terminal distances that disable the enemies.

I don't know how much more can be done until then.

Re: [Mod] Shinobi Densetsu (Discontinued)

big_smile this looks great and i didnt know you could edit this engine like that but it seems you can. theres only one reason i wont get it though its that that kind of thing doesnt seem to intrest me im not tryign to insult you i just rather play sonic or castlevania or maybe maplestory if you heard of that than this idk y its still good.

If you like sonic, castlevania, resident evil, mario, metroid,or zelda more than call of duty your awesome! If you play call of duty all day and that only game you talk about you are a loser and are missing out on actual good games. As for me I love to play games just games in general I would classify myself as a game geek.

SD is going to play Santa. So, what would you like to see in the Xmas release? Best suggestions make it into the game and the authors will get their own NPC and a spot in the credits.
