Great news: Jason, our fellow artist from SD team has agreed to contribute graphics that we can adapt to SSP and any other stage.

in our dropbox folder there is a subfolder in "images" called "tiles by Jason Buividas" containing his contributions.

I agreed with lunarrush over IM in that we should use the leaves from his sets. everyone please take a look and see what we can use.

that's a great work. Is it all cc-by-sa 3.0?

Re: [Subproject] Sunshine Paradise

i dont know, but we got his permission to use them at will.

Edit: there is also a new level called ssp_proto in which i'm trying a new brickset based on the template i posted a while back, it uses Race's pattern, but was edited to have a larger grass area. not perfect yet, but its a start

I edited the template brickset and made this:

Download the complete set here (music by TheGuitahHeroe):

No, this is not Green Hill Zone, and, yes, everything is original. smile

Can we license it under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 then? Or is it public domain? Does Jason know it's being used on Open Surge?

This is the "improved texture" I said in an earlier post. Excellent! This square-pattern texture should be merged/mixed into the brickset on dropbox. smile

Re: [Subproject] Sunshine Paradise

I have just seen the test you guys made on dropbox using SurgeChris' texture, and it's great in my opinion. Of course it's still very basic (very few features - it needs more bricks like trees [Race's made one], leaves, waterfalls, etc), but it's got the right feeling in my opinion.

Well done!

Thanks for the compliment, guys!

Wasn't Sunshine Paradise supposed to be a meadow? Let's implement fewer trees and leaves in act 1 and more trees, leaves, waterfalls in act 2. I think act 2 will be better if it's a MUCH greener area.

All i can answer is that he knows that it is for Open Surge. I haven't been able to speak to him about licensing, but i'll keep you informed.

Well, it was that AND a forested area...

Ah, a transfer from less forest to more heavily forested. I like it.

Re: [Subproject] Sunshine Paradise

And...
Revision 2 is finished! Now, there's water near the end of the level and the level design itself was slightly tweaked. Credits:
- KZR: Background
- Me: Brickset, level modification
- Alexandre: Initial level design
- TheGuitahHeroe: Music
- KZR, SilverstepP, lunarrush: Water (they DID work together on this)
Tell me if your name isn't here! I'll add it.

I'll make a new brickset for act 2. It will feature green soil (yes, green), more grass, waterfalls, falling leaves, trees, RIVERS (yes, rivers, shouldn't the dam that will come in Waterworks Zone be on a river?), and a completely different (and more forest-themed) background. It will still feature the important 'sunshine', though.

Have you uploaded this somewhere? I don't see it in the svn or in dropbox.

Just a side note: focus on things other than level building now. You can finish the brickset (put some bushes, some breakable walls, etc. - it's looking too much "BETA" as of revision 1). Scripters/artists should finish the objects (enemies and items) discussed here. Level building is the last thing to be made. The "Sunshine Paradise Act 1" that is in dropbox today will not be the first level, because it's too damn hard for people who don't know how to play. Too many loops in a hard to control manner. The first level must be a smooth introduction. I think we can leave the level building to wrath, if is he's still around.

I'll work on the barrel cannons and the trip hazard rock now. I'll also start designing some enemy gfx, which will be found in the dropbox soon.

Maybe we should organize things better? Like creating one thread for each object being made for Sunshine Paradise, and give updates on that particular thread. That way, people who are willing to contribute won't feel lost, and can know exactly how to contribute. What do you think?

Perhaps. Let's get at least an alpha object made, first off. I'm on gchat right now if you need me.

I say we go in between:

"SSP Zone Enemies"
"SSP Zone Gimmicks (things that are not enemies)"

What do you think?

that's not a problem. It's even better. Imagine you're a newcomer here, love open source and want to contribute. You read our sticky threads and all you hear is "be proactive". You ask yourself: "be proactive how???". Or you can be a veteran here, but you don't know exactly what you should be doing.

If we create a bunch of threads, one for each task, things get much clearer. Each task has a leader.

Example:

Task: [Sunshine Paradise] Barrels
Leader: SilverstepP
"I'm making the scripts, but I need help with art. Can somebody help me out?"

(the same for other objects and for the brickset)

Then anybody can volunteer, and the tasks are clear. The way to help is clear, because there's a leader for each task, who knows exactly what to do and when. Then you can present your task, completed, and we merge it into the main game

And we can give feedback for each task in a much more organized manner.

Great. Please send our thanks to him. smile

I'm not a lawyer, but given that he said "do what you will with them", we can probably license his work under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 (and he's still the owner of the work).

Re: [Subproject] Sunshine Paradise

Hey guys...
s026.png
s027.png

Now you have some enemies in SurgeChris' level (Sunshine Paradise act 1, according to level select) in the dropbox, graphics hand-drawn by me. They will be improved and worked on as time passes. In the meantime, we at least have some things to work with in act 1 now. Check out the level and see what I'm talking about.

This will most likely be posted in it's own topic with some downloads soon if it needs improvement and I get stuck on something. Though, all it really needs is for the fish to have better animation, IMO. (The Flower Spring enemy turned out wonderfully in my opinion, the most it probably needs is some slight coloring adjustments and fine tuning)

I also vote that for sake of organization, that we put 'ssp_' in front of each .spr and .obj used in Sunshine Paradise. (ssp_springfling.spr, for example). We can do 'ww_' for Waterworks, 'bf_' for Black Forest, and so on. This makes it easier to find objects in a specific level to fine tune if your 'objects' and 'sprites' folder starts to fill up.

Oh, and also, the fish needs some water or waterfalls to stay in. He looks kind of odd jumping from land. tongue
