Hi,
I had a simple thought a few days ago:
I came to learn about OpenSonic through the magic word 'Sonic' typed in the google bar, and I know many of us have had this way.
Then, to avoid seeing this awesome project lose popularity because of slowly switching to open content (which I'm fine with),
I wondered whether the sonic branding data should be kept also, to keep out OpenSonic releases, showing the new functionalities, or simply for fun, at least until the open data has reached an enough mature state.
The magical stone data could also be used for such a branding, btw.
What do you think, is my idea worthy? Doesn't we want to see an open games while keep using Sonic himself sometimes?
Best regards.

The problem with keeping any ripped Sonic material is copyright infringement, which, considering Sonic is still a major franchise, is highly possible. "Knock-off" doesn't sound anywhere near as good as "Open-Source", and the "free and open-source" part allows potential, legal, and legitimate progress. This project WILL eventually disappear if we don't clean up the ripped parts included, while free and open-source, the game can gain great popularity, no risks, no problems.
What I suggest (and what I would like to do), is to make similar blocks to replace any ripped ones. For instance, many sonic blocks use checkered squares under some grass designs. One way to fix it would be to just change the checkers to diamonds, octagons, or other geometric shapes, slightly or significantly off-color, and then just change the grass design to something else. Otherwise, the shape and design are preserved, only the art itself changed.

JJ's right. Using ripped stuff is copyright infringement. Even if it wasn't, why use old stuff when we can create better stuff? Take the monitors/computers for example. These have a problem with them. You can't place them in air without them looking awkward. I decided to edit the graphics so they look like picture frames, which fixes that problem.

No, we won't keep Open Sonic. We're not just replacing graphics. We're moving towards a different game concept.
If, within the few next years, Open Surge can't gain popularity with its own name and its own concept, after all the effort and ideas we're putting in, then it plainly sucks.
We're working to make Open Surge be a great original game that shines on its own.

i've seen Open Sonic, as it was as of 0.1.4 hosted all over the internet. so i guess it will still be popular. #1 result in google is this site, that's a fact, but Sonic & co are just legacy for this project

The worst thing that can happen is that SEGA's lawyers sends out a cease & desist letter to the OpenSNC team. Although this would give Open Surge quite a good publicity if this where to happen, this is something we don't want to happen because then we've done all development in vain. And regarding a ban... No one intends to ban a member for asking a much valid question.
