Mechanical Marathon Demo: Urban Rush (1.0) and Briney Beach (0.75)

It's here!!!

s006-3.png
s004-2.png

Download Here

Yes, that's right, the demo of Mechanical Marathon's 1st and 3rd zones is here!

A few notes to keep in mind:

-The objects in this game probably will not work with Open Surge's official releases. Don't just paste an object into the game and expect it to not have errors, since my objects are engineered to recognize my characters.

-In Urban Rush, to get out of the pit you may get stuck in (you'll figure out the one), you must wall-kick. You wall-kick by pushing a wall and hitting the 'up' button while you're still pushing the wall. The idea is once you hit 'up', press down on the other direction and you'll get great momentum. If all else fails, you can just do a Jump Dash (hit jump again after a jump) and use that momentum to get out.

-The electric generators you see require you to do targeted lightning. That is activated by holding up while not moving, and pressing and holding the jump button. As you hold it down, a cursor is shown indicating where the lightning will strike. This can go through walls, so use it to your advantage! See the first picture for an example.

-While surfing in Briney Beach, you can do damage while jumping in the air. As a matter of fact, you're 'strong' while on the board, and can damage pretty much anything no matter what you do. Keep this in mind while fighting off the Jetfires.

-You can't jump in the minecart.

-Watch the Silver Metal Drones. They can slash you for damage if you time a jump on them wrong.

-DO NOT USE TARGETED LIGHTNING WHILE IN WATER. Trust me. It's a bad idea.

-Briney Beach is kind of incomplete at the moment; act 2 is very small, and it has no boss quite yet, Updates will contain this.

-Keep in mind that there are special gold and blue emblems hidden in levels that award you a nice 10,000 points each.... and maybe unlock something (or someone) in the near future!

-The barricades in Urban Rush can't be broken by the character you're playing as.

-The spring near the end of Urban Rush is activated by striking it with lightning. You need to jump on it fairly fast before it runs out of it's charge.

-You'll recognize the first boss. roll But don't let your guard down. He has a different attack that you probably won't expect.

-Have fun. That's the whole point of this game. wink

Updates to the demo are coming soon, but I'm probably taking a break from it for right now. If there's any bugs, please let me know! big_smile

EDIT: Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Try using targeted lightning on the Metal Drones. You will laugh.

Re: Mechanical Marathon Demo: Urban Rush (1.0) and Briney Beach (0.75)

the demo is pretty awesome, if you ask me. Loved the pinball machines and the surfing mode on briney beach. smile

such a good work makes me realize that we're not achieving (not even close) our potential for the open surge game itself (including the intro cutscene, and the newly created brickset for ssp). Perhaps the community-driven development model is no good at all.

parenthesis aside, excellent work! your mod could include more levels, though. cool

Re: Mechanical Marathon Demo: Urban Rush (1.0) and Briney Beach (0.75)

TOTALLY AWESOME.

But one thing: I cant get past briney beach Act 1 tongue

It is very hard.

Sugestions:

- On the Urban Rush zone Act 2, almost at the end of the level, there is a pipe that throws you right to a curve going up.

There is a cliff up that high terrain. You cant get up there with the force of the pipe or the boost..

- Put warning signs before the water in Briney.

- Put more enemies on the levels and make them more agresive (this is if you want a harder game, with balance between speed and plataforming)

- The boss in Urban Rush Act 3 is awesome.

1. The Pipe System does this if you enter it while grounded. If you JUMP into it, it works properly. I'm trying to find a fix for this but I've had no success so far.

2. Wall kick to get through that Big Ramp near the end. If you flooded the area, you have to take a different path. Remember the Wall Kick, it is your best friend.

3. I like the warning signs idea.

4. I like this idea too, but this is only the first and third level. Trust me, you'll get overwhelmed soon enough.

5. I know. cool

Uh, there's a minor thing in the release right now. In the surfing section, when I posted that fix, I wiped most of the enemies out too. Posting a fix within the hour!

Lol

Keep up your speed while running. You don't surf til later in the level. You run on the water's surface until then.

This is awesome! The water is cool, but I think it limits vertical movement a bit too much.

Next time around there's going to be switchable, selectable items that alleviate this effect a bit, but for now it's done on purpose. I attempted to make it act more like real water; you can jump really well in it, but you can't go down too fast.

Playthrough of Briney Beach act 2's full version! I'll release it when I finish the boss stage.

It spoiled the emblem's location too. xD

Glad you all seem to like it.

That one was a lot harder than it first appears to be. I had an object take the focus of the camera and I set up some 'boundaries' that set the player position if they go out of the area by reading the xpos and ypos of the player (like if you go down too far you die, you go too far to the left you get bumped right). Then I just used move.

when is the game of this version coming out.

Not active much anymore.
The only things I do now is just let inspiration come to me when it's needed.
Also bad profile pic because I don't have anything else in mind.
