We can't use the Genesis/Megadrive soundfont because there are rules against using any content ripped from the original Sonic games, or anything else.
But I found something better.
Use this website to get many, many free soundfonts. This has been very useful to me so far, and actually far surpasses with the Genesis soundfont had to offer.
Just click the tabs at the right to get started.

OK, there's this one soundfont I really like called Fluid R3. It says:
FLUID® R3
Released to Public Domain on 12/25/01

This is a public domain soundfont... doesn't that mean I can use it freely? Or am I wrong due to mr. copyright?

CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGE!
I would assume that "Released to the public domain" would imply that we can use it freely.
This is what it says on the homepage of the website:
"Welcome to the Free Sound Vault. Here you can download free sound samples, soundfonts, wavs, hip hop samples, etc. for your use in music production and hip hop beat making."
So yes, we can use it freely. However I do think we might just have to give credit to Mr. Frank Wen for creating the soundfonts. . . but I don't think that's a big deal. We can get permission. The bottom line is, however, that these sounds were not ripped from anywhere.

Whoooooa, this site is very good. I may use this over Fluid R3 anyways.

I think I misunderstood what you meant. . .lol, I thought you got the fluid R3 soundfont from the website. My bad. However I recommend that we all use the website just to keep a connection between the songs in the game.

Seems reasonable enough.

Something little extra to spice up your soundfont usage. This may not look like much, but h*** I'm sold at it, and it's FREE!
It's an 8 part multitimbral soundfont loader, yep load up to 8 soundfonts in one patch.

Hi SilverstepP,
I actually "relicensed" the soundfont under the GNU license a little over a year ago for distribution in Ubuntu. You are good to go to use it.
Yes, I still like to trawl the net time to time to see what's going on with my work
Feel free to hit me up. fluidfont[at]gmail

Wha-- You're the guy who created Fluid R3?!
Excellent stuff!
I'm glad to hear I can use this soundfont... but Alex has the final word on the matter.

Indeed it is I sir... It's amazing that Fluid R3 is still floating around the net.. seems to be more popular than when I made it 10 years ago... hard to believe that much time has passed. I've only been more curious than usual about what's going on with it because I wrote about my experience making it as part of my application to chiropractic school. Too bad most of the threads I see about it from Google are just jibberish to me.. 27 year old semi-ex audiophile, ex-engineer,ex-analyst, future healthcare provider.. amazing where life takes you isn't it?

Nice to see the creator himself.
He is also giving explicit authorization, so of course we can use it. Thank you, Frank.

I spoke with Dennis, the author of Phenome, and I asked on the behalf of the Open Surge commuity if we may use the factory presets to compose music for the game. He gives us green light to do that.
