Re: concept art for Surge the rabbit

Nice, J0nnJ0nes. I like the orange version better. smile What about you, people?

Perhaps he can have smaller shoes? Looks like his feet are bigger than his head.

I like that one a lot. It's got just the right personality. Looks brave, confident.

I have made a few edits. The GIMP source is: http://www.easy-share.com/1912734981/surge.xcf

Thoughts?

Re: concept art for Surge the rabbit

Yes, that last one is great! big_smile I've been trying to make a SVG version, but I sort of gave up on it for now because it's taking too long, and I have less and less time nowadays. Anyone else is welcome to give it a go (it's not hard, just tedious), so different positions can be tested.

Now, if it's so favorable, how about a set with different colors, or at least different shades. I think a little darker orange might help. Different colored shoes too (purple + yellow, and others).

I agree. Could we get a better shoe design? It looks too much like 'Sonic shoes without the stripe'...

Re: concept art for Surge the rabbit

Ok, here's what I stopped at: Surge The Rabbit Test (incomplete) SVG

Literally, I traced the image with the bezier curve pen in Inkscape, and tried to arrange and color things properly. That's all that really needs to be done with this now if anyone's willing. The ears and some other pieces might need to be retraced because I forgot to leave the bezier shape open, so that there is no border on one side (just smooth color). The other small details in the newer, color version (above this post somewhere) are easy to add to this.

@KZR: You see. I said so, that the concept art doesn't really shrink to sprite form well. Now the sprite needs a bigger eye, less pot-belly? (I think that's the hair), and more details. It just needs some refinement, but it's good. And again, figure out the right colors. I can't tell what color eye it has, and the beige seems a little faded.

Is there something missing? This is what I see:

Opening the .svg in Inkscape says "Linked image not found"

Re: concept art for Surge the rabbit

Oops! Sorry! Why in the world are the images only LINKED! sad I hate it when it just links things, instead of copying them, or at least it should alert me that they're just linked when I save it.

The original background image for that SVG was the colorless basic sketch:

surgetherabbittest.png

I think putting this PNG in the same directory might work. If not, just copy and paste it in. I traced over its features, and I had to scatter them about to trace each part right.

Re: concept art for Surge the rabbit

Here's my new concept.
pic215.jpg
I drew this randomly in my free time after my test, at the back of my computer textbook.
It's not colored, but you can easily apply my colors in it (avatar, tongue )

yeah it looks kind of deformed compared to the concept. i guess i should take upon SilverstepP's character style so the chars don't look much different from each other in terms of style. even after a try on fitting it to the style of Charge, the ears always stick out of the box, so i guess we should reduce the ears, and adapt some parts of the concept art to fit the style of the sprites. but thats just my opinion, what do you all think?

personally i like the colors very much, that's why i did the recolor. it seems that people like it too. i vote we keep those colors.

Surge could just be smaller. I imagine Charge is the oldest in the group.

Perhaps Surge's body could fit in a rectangle of 50x50, 50x45 (a bit smaller), and his ears could surpass it, making the whole rectangle have a height of a bit more than 50 pixels (so it could be, say, 50x55, 50x60).

Re: concept art for Surge the rabbit

The colors are definitely the right hues, the eye color even perfect. But, I still think there should be a line-up because, personally, I still think it's faded. I think I'll have some time tomorrow to work on some of the data, and, I'm not sure, but I might be able to use some shiny lights to make it look better.

The main problem with just about all the Surge concept art is one continuous color. There should be some interesting patterns or something to break the simple outline.

But if you like it, it's okay.

Let's make Surge 15 or 16 years old, Charge 18 or 19, and Neon 13 or 14.

Your drawing has a very good quality (I can't draw something like that myself), but my sincere opinion, and perhaps others agree, is that we can see Sonic in there. I believe one of the reasons people liked the previous concept is because it looks good (just like yours), but without being Sonic.

Please don't get mad. We're all aware of the huge contribution you are giving to this game. smile
