Hello! Let me introduce myself:
I'm TheGuitahHeroe. You can call me TGH for short. I make video game remixes in my spare time, and have a (somewhat) successful Youtube channel. My friend told me about this game and that he was composing music for it (JoePotato), and I figured, why not? I asked him if he needed another composer, and he said yes. So here I am!
Anyway, I really like the way this genesis soundfont sounds.
This is my first music submission here (and it certainly won't be the last).
Let me know what you think of this one, it's dark and gloomy, and I think it would be perfect for the Crystal Temple level.
Thanks!

I love it. This track is very ambient, and I like the Genesis soundfont too. xD
Well, it should be noted that this is, again, not top priority right now. We'll probably come back to it like the other submitted songs that Joe and I did... this level is a bit further into the game, so it may take a bit.
The track also must be in .ogg format to be used in the game, if you didn't know that already... so once we get a good song thats been approved, be sure to convert it.
But, it sounds awesome! I'm looking forward to hearing more from you.

Awesome! Glad you like it, I hope it gets in!
Anyway I have a really good idea for Sunny Paradise so stay tuned.

Welcome TheGuitahHeroe
The music is very nice indeed, but it seems the samples of the original Sonic games are being used in the song, hence we can't adopt it.
Please read the Submission guidelines: http://opensnc.sourceforge.net/forum/vi … php?id=499
Thank you for the contribution, but we can't accept it. However, we'd love to hear more from you.

I don't understand . . . I was told I had to use a certain soundfont. It's not a sample from the game, it's just one of the drum instruments that came with the soundfont. The fact that it's the same type of drum is purely coincidence.
But if all I have to do is change the drum sample, then I can do that easily. Is there anything else that I should change?

Oh, sorry then. If the samples don't come from a copyrighted source, then I was mistaken.
I don't know much about sound fonts, so probably some of the guys can solve this issue better than I can. Anyway, do the sound font being used has some kind of restriction? Is it protected somehow? Copyright issues?

I downloaded the soundfont from a link off a Youtube video, and the description said that credit should be given to a guy named "TheEighthBit." And I believe that's it for copyright issues
Offline
If those issues are not clear, we can't use the music, even if it's brillant.
As pointed out in the Submission guidelines, you must have full rights over your work. Since this is a free game (as in freedom), we're looking for free content as well.

My homepage
I computer science.
The description of the Youtube video I mentioned earlier says, in it's entirety, as follows:
"If you use the soundfont, please give credit to TheEighthBit. If you want, you can send me a remix made with the soundfont, or post it as a response to this video. This is version 2 of the Ultimate Megadrive Soundfont (now called the Ultimate Megadrive/Genesis Soundfont). There are many new things in the soundfont:
-New demo midis
-New instruments
-Instrument volume problems fixed
-New drum samples from sonic 3 and others.
-New drum sets: electronic and dance
NOTE: some midis made for version 1.5 will not sound good in V.2 because of the many things changed."
So basically it looks like all we have to do is give credit to "TheEighthBit" for making the soundfont. No purchases were made to acquire the soundfont; it was a free download. I do, as well, assume full responsibility for the making of the music track. Just not the soundfont. Is that acceptable?

Exactly, I said I was using this before Alexandre... this soundfont only required to give credit to TheEighthBit, and I did back on the boss song. Remember how I mentioned the Genesis Soundfont? This is the same one. We gave credit. It is fully doable.
And also, this stuff doesn't even borrow anything from the Sonic games IN PARTICULAR, but the Genesis's music system ITSELF. This is like saying you can't play a guitar because Sonic Adventure 1 had guitars in it.
I really, really hope you say this is OK, because if you don't, Black Forest, my Waterworks Zone (coming soon), and the Boss Theme (I really, really don't want to go back to this) will have to be redone again...
And if we can't use these instruments because it isn't 'full rights' because we didn't make the soundfont, it's going to be very, very difficult to submit anything. The guy doesn't ask for much, just credit... and we gave him that.

I understand how you are all eager to develop musics for the game, and that's great, but we cannot and will not accept any copyright issues for open surge. I don't want any liabilities here.
-New drum samples from sonic 3 and others.
That's a problem. Even if you give credits to "TheEighthBit", what's the origin of those sounds?

If the procedence of those sounds are not legal, then we cannot accept the musics, not even the boss theme.
One must have full rights over his or her work in order to contribute. You can either contact the author of the soundfont and prove it's legal and free (as in freedom), or, better yet, use proven free sound fonts.
If the origin of those sounds cannot be proven to be legal, then unfortunately the boss song will have to be remade.

More free soundfonts here: http://www.soundfonts.it/?a=soundfonts
This website includes an explicit copyright notice saying that:
All the soundfonts are FREE for download, there are no restrictions on their usage in commercial projects as well as redistrubution or re-package in any form.

I just messaged RecFreeMedia (aka TheEighthBit) regarding the soundfont and copyright restraints. Here's my message to him:
Hi there, I'm TheGuitahHeroe. I'm composing music for a fanmade video game called "Open Surge." I need to know if there are any copyright restraints regarding your Genesis/Megadrive Soundfont. Are any of the sounds copyrighted? Please message me back.

I've just seen this video containing a demo of the referred soundfont and it has some samples that really, really look like a lot some genesis games, like Michael Jackson and Sonic. The sounds are not free after all. We can't accept those, sorry.
Offline
I just looked at that link that you provided with the free soundfonts.
I'm gonna say right off the bat that I WILL NOT make music for a Sonic game using an orchestral soundfont. A sonic game deserves more retro music.
I'm not even sure the sounds are still copyrighted from, what, almost twenty years ago when the games were made.
And why wouldn't the sounds themselves be free??
I just don't get it.

In addition, this will be a free game, correct? It's not being sold, therefore copyright issues should be nonexistent.

Well, it's up to you. I'm not saying one should use this or that soundfont. I'm just saying we can't adopt non-free content. If you find a free soundfont that has a retro feel, then great. Free is not "freeware", free is freedom.
All I'm concerned about is whether the musics contain ripped samples in it or not. The rest is up to you guys.

Isnt there some kind of alternative to the genesis soundfont, that sounds like it? Its yamaha something and it comes with FL studio 9. I cant quite remember what it is

OK.
The way I see it (as I mentioned in my lastest post), the game itself is free. It's not being sold for money. So shouldn't copyright issues pretty much be null and void? Or am I incorrect in thinking this? Even if the sounds were ripped from the game (which I don't believe they are anyway), it wouldn't matter because there is no profit being made from the use of them.

Are we going by Brazilian copyright laws or American?
I dont really know anything about Brazils copyright laws

This is a common misconception. We do not own the rights to the samples used in Sonic the Hedgehog. It doesn't matter whether our game can be downloaded at no cost or not.
We're developing a free software (not just a freeware) called Open Surge. It's very important that contributors understand that this is *not* another Sonic the Hedgehog fangame. Open Surge is free software, therefore we do not accept non-free content.

That would solve the problems.
Even so, the soundfont IS free, regardless. There's no logical reason for not using it. I'll even try contactinng the guy if I must.
Being free is not the same as being freeware. Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_content
Free content, or free information, is any kind of functional work, artwork, or other creative content having no significant legal restriction relative to people's freedom to use, distribute copies, modify, and to distribute derived works of the content.
You can even contact "the guy", but if the samples are taken from non-free sources, we can't adopt them.

But there's no need for you to explain it, because I have found a website with free soundfonts available for use.
