Storyline

Hi everybody...

----- Some questions and tips:
I've thinking about the storyline of OpenSonic... And I have a few questions...Will it have a story? Will be based in some history? Or some like "Origins", or a continuation?
Because I was thinking about the Angel Island "Saga" (Sonic 3 & Knuckles) - for me, the best storyline -, but with a lot of stages/maps/badnicks following a story, with real interactivity... Example: If the story is in the Island, in the "Beach" will not have some astronaut-badnicks or lava-boys, will have things that have only in beach...

A offtopic question: Did anyone heard about "Sonic 2 HD"? I was drawing some characters in Inkscape (opensource vector-based drawing program) and thinking in help them and in implement this idea in OpenSonic... What do you think? -- Don't you know what is a "HD" game? Search in google "Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix".

----- Organization of the project:
First of all, we need a map of the island. Mapping all parts, like: Jungle of Monkeys, Dark Forest, Beach, Deactivated Vulcan, North Beach, etc...
Later we must define which parts we will use in history, or if will have Extra Levels inside the main story based in some actions...
And finally, code and play =]

Sonic Team:
Sonic the Hedgehog

Interactive based in story:
Amy the Hedgehog (as sonic-lover and helps the team unexpectedly, live following sonic)
Vector the Crocodile (live in the swamp)
Big the Cat (live near the beach)
Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel (live in the forest near the swamp)
Charmy Bee (lives in the forest)
Cream the Rabbit and Vanilla the Rabbit (lives in the forest near the mountain)
Freddy the Monkey -fan char- (live in the forest near the beach)

Gerald Robotnik (as a memory)
Maria Robotnik (as a memory)

Evil-side Characters:
Ivo Robotnik (a.k.a. Dr. Eggman/Robotnik)
Rouge the Bat
Espio the Chameleon
Fowk the Eagle -fan char-
Jigg the Crabby -fan char-
Mecha Team

Ps.: The Fan Characters I've made to add some animals in the story.

----- Universe:
The Planet:
Its a world with the same climatic/terrain conditions of the planet earth, but with more technology and minus devastation and exploration of the fuel and raw material.
The planet have some populated parts but not all, like the Main Island of the game.

The Animals/Peoples:
The animals are like humans, they can walk, speak... but the animals that appears in the stages are babies, and they were captured to make badniks.
The main characters are like the most popular or the most powerful of each species.

* Chaos Emeralds:
Gems that carry a lot of power and can grown the strength/agility/vitality/energy of the character or used to "charge" some weapons.
Each emeralds have an special power, and they can be combined to do different kind of things.
They have some "Evolutions", like in S3K (but in S3K only have 2 stages, normal and master).

----- Story:
Gerald Robotnik is the Most intelligent man, it discovered the power of the chaos emeralds, and tried to do good things with them, but the initial experiences have made Shadow, and so he has quit.
Ivo Robotnik, has discovered the power of the emeralds when he was searching some researches of his grandfather, and so he started the search for the emeralds.

Everything begins with Ivo Robotnik, when he finds the island and started to use the baby animals to make robots to help him in the search in the Angel Island for the Chaos Emeralds.
Some animals fought against him, some wins, but a big part loses. Some animals are helping him. And our heroes are still fighting till the leave of Robotnik.

----- Stages:
1- Swamp - Morning - ___________
Sonic team have heard about some machines working to find a emerald, and so they are taking a look.

2- Forest - Afternoon and Night - Spider Forest
After defeating the egg robot and rescued some babies, Knuckles feels that have an Emerald near them, and they were take a look.

Ps2.: The parts which have "__________" is because have no name defined.

----- Finalizing:
That's a W.I.P. (Work in Progress) Story, so:

Sonic 2 HD. i try the first demo and is slower (with a 3D card and 1.5 GB RAM, intel 2.66 processor, etc, etc), realy a lot of time of making it and sonic movements are bad, no level finished (none) but the graphics are "ok", realy in a first view i think tath Sonic 2 HD will see better but looks like a medium-remasterization realy isn't a supergame, is other sonic fangame.
Search at YouTube for the sonic 3d fangames, realy are better than this Sonic 2 remaster.

In this time i only can question the HD, i know this project is for all the people, so people with old-computers maybe can play the game, but Alexander is adding some filters to the game.. and this post created before contains the first level:

Realy i love vector graphics, i try this style before but in open sonic don't like good > only if the graphic's are vector's pixelated with no-smothing borders, like the sega genesis sonic games or the "vector" gsm_vector2genesis_om_mul_102406_140.jpg game made for Sega Genesis.

This is my opinion but i think this > your ideas are good.

lainz, about the sonic 2hd, if you play in the "correct" resolution (the one which is like the Sonic games, the player isn't bigger or smaller than the Genesis games) the speed is good =]
But I wasn't speaking about do Vector Graphics, only redrawing chars without these lot of pixels, but with that, I think that the "Pallete System" must be disabled =x

OK, let's discuss the basics first. smile

  • Open Sonic will definitely have a story. Both characters and story should be "compatible" with the cooperative play.

  • The story must not depend on some other Sonic games, since Open Sonic will be available to ( I hope tongue ) a wide range of people

  • Sonic 2 HD looks cool, but Open Sonic has different goals. Open Sonic should have a small download and should run on both fast and not-so-fast computers/devices. This policy will help Open Sonic to be everywhere within a few years. smile On fast computers, we can apply graphic filters (like lainz said) to improve the look & feel.

Since this is a free project (in sense of freedom), we'll have to replace Sonic/Tails/Knuckles by something else. We'll also have to create some other villain (not Robotnik). Of course these new characters can be similar to the original ones, but not equal to them.

The Chaos Emeralds should be replaced by something else too. It's okay to call classify the items you win from the Bonus Stages as crystals or medallions (or something else).

We need a person who can make some concept art, so all these ideas can be transformed in something more concrete.
