The new characters

In our last meeting, we have decided:

We have 3 new playable characters:
- a rabbit (it runs fast and it can double jump)
- a squirrel (it can fly and carry other characters around)
- a badger (it can glide and climb walls)

There are no names nor concept arts yet. Is there someone here who can draw the concepts?

We must also discuss their names. Any ideas?
suggestion: since we're opensnc, snc could be the concatenation of the first letter of their names.

We shouldn't use Silver, there is already a Silver in the Sonic series...

What about "Charge the Badger"?  I don't think there is one of those out there yet.

I had no idea. After doing some research, I found out that 'Silver the Hedgehog' is a registered name. Silver, however, is a metallic chemical element, not a registered name. And as far as I know, Silver the Rabbit isn't a registered character either (Google didn't find anything relevant), so we can use it.

How about 'Surge the Rabbit'?

Re: The new characters

Celdecea and I discussed it a bit. We suggest that the character names be based on elements of electricity.

'Surge' the Rabbit, 'Neon' the Squirrel, and 'Charge' the Badger.

Re: The new characters

'Neon' the Squirrel and 'Charge' the Badger are cool names. I'm not happy with 'Surge' the Rabbit, though.

I was thinking yesterday that we actually have two projects: the opensnc engine and the game itself. There's no 'Open Sonic' anymore (I plan to release one last version of it, 0.1.4, which fixes bugs from 0.1.3).

In other words, we have a new game called, say, Silver the Rabbit. "opensnc" does not have a strong appeal for the end user, but Silver the Rabbit does.

"Silver the Rabbit is a classic 2D jump'n'run game inspired on the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' series. This game introduces a different style of gameplay called team play, blablabla, blablabla, and it's covered by the GPL. Main features:
* blabla
* bleble
* blibli
* and much more!
Silver the Rabbit is being developed in C and it uses the opensnc engine."

Speaking of electricity, Silver is the best electrical conductor of any known metal.

Re: The new characters

The time for my return has come. I've been busy as hell this spring with alot of projects that I tend to, open sonic is one and I put in my plans to wait until 0.13 is out, since it is, and I think this is quite a neat game with it's new features I thought why not give these cuddly critters some name:

Swift (rabbit)
Aero (squirrel)
Glide (badger)

As for the name:
I am in favor of the name of Silver the rabbit change to Swift the rabbit.
1. I prefer the name Swift.
2. To call the character Silver the rabbit anyway that call it Sonic the rabbit. wink

My current levels projects:
Egg Destroyer zone(45%)? Paint City zone(10%), Hollywood zone(100%)
Future projects:
Seacrest County zone

I drew some rough pictures of Silver already (in pencil), but  don't have a scanner, so I can't submit it.

Re: The new characters

Hmmmm... Well, there's already lots of Sonic fans out there, and they've started to draw some stuff up too. Personally, I found the Sonic Character Designer useful for coming up with designs (it's been mentioned before on this forum by someone else, but few looked into it).

These are some places with nice ones, just be sure to ask for permission to use them (I doubt they would object):

http://felicia-val.deviantart.com/art/S … 5767&qo=10
http://felicia-val.deviantart.com/art/W … 5767&qo=35
http://felicia-val.deviantart.com/art/O … 5767&qo=54

http://amytherose.deviantart.com/
http://midnightthecat1.deviantart.com/
http://voregirl.deviantart.com/art/Megs … -156376654

You can also look for more, as there's plenty of Deviant Art Sonic fans that have even made groups.

P.S. I made these with the Sonic Character Designer... maybe they might help stir some creative sludge?:

Zazi-1
Zazi-2
Zazi-3

Note: "Zazi the Beast" is actually from the anime/manga Trigun, so full, it could never be used. It's just the only thing that came to mind when making it. A cross of these images somehow might work. If none of these are nice enough, GOOD, then go make some with the Sonic Character Designer.

Names: Atomisk, Blaze, Cain, Cypher, Drax, Laize, Loki, Max, Nami (Namie), Nori (Noriko), Noroi ("Curse" in Japanese), Shade, Sipher, Sorin, Zazi, Zephyr.

No wolf though? Maybe as an enemy? At least a spider... As a matter of fact, doesn't this guy looks like the perfect replacement for Robotnik:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_spider (Looks better from farther away.)

This is interesting too:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bathy … anteus.jpg

Take what you like and chunk the rest! tongue big_smile

Re: The new characters

Can't we make it so you can assemble a team anyway you want? I'm thinking of having 18 characters to play with. Six of each type, with six normal characters and six unlockable characters. The six normal characters can be Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Custom S(peed), Custom F(ly), and Custom P(ower). Which gives me an idea that requires another thread.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... one step at a time, Nix! We're still discussing what 3 characters should be... let alone 18! Once we get more ideas flowing, then we could possibly consider this. However, I don't believe 18 is a truly realistic number in the future... I think it should be no more than 9. (3 speed, 3 fly, 3 power)

Re: The new characters

Actually, I thought having 15 extra customizable character slots was better. Here, read this: http://opensnc.sourceforge.net/forum/vi … php?id=359

Re: The new characters

We're not creating 18 playable characters for the game (not even 9), but you can create your own characters since the source code is available.

If you're just talking about graphics, you can change the sprites of the characters to pretty much anything you like by modifying the config/sprites.def file. 0.2.0 will include improved MODding capabilities, such as changing the entire graphics configuration in a per-level basis, and we think this will be enough for most of you.

If you're talking about new characters with custom abilities and everything, you'll have to make your own custom MOD of the game by modifying the source code.

Re: The new characters

Oh, and also, can't there be any aquatic-oriented characters that can breathe and swim easily underwater but are at a disadvantage above water? Because I still have nightmares about how Sonic drowns so easily... sad You can't say the original game was balanced in terms of aquatic environments. Bubble shields pop at the most terrifying of times.

That character should also be able to help the others underwater (drag them quickly?). I was thinking some character like knuckles, just aquatic, maybe with tentacle dreadlocks instead. Maybe an otter? Do they really have to be animals? What about hybrid creatures?

Other possible animals (further characters, or if options still open):
-Spiny Mice
-Lemurs (They diversified to be like monkeys, squirrels, cats, mice, etc.)
-Civet
-Genet + Aquatic Genet
-Tasmanian Devil
-Wallabee

If not, then in a mod to add more characters (I'm up for it).

Re: The new characters

Adding one (and just one) character in the game is feasible. An user named Paulius from Eastern Europe suggested the insertion of a female character into the game story. I think it's a good idea. This strategy is particularly useful for increasing the diversity of our users - I haven't heard of many girls who play this game.
