Spike graphics

These are some real quick spikes I threw together tonight.  They are nothing spectacular but necessary in a Sonic-style game.

Edit: This is the updated sprite, based on suggestions in this thread.

The information necessary to install these sprites is located at the wiki.

Re: Spike graphics

I especially like the wooden handles! I think the spikes are a bit too large if not used for a "death-pit". A shorter version with the handles would also be cool!

Re: Spike graphics

I like the idea of the handles, but the spikes themselves seem a bit blocky. But that's just my opinion. But I DO like the shadows on them, it makes them look round.

Here are two reworks:

The one on the right is the original with a slightly shorter profile.  The one on the left is an experiment with double-layered spikes that came out looking decent.

Which one looks better so far?

Re: Spike graphics

The left one is very nice. I believe it's ok to include this small sprite in the game even though the art workflow isn't completed yet. However, the Lead Artist has the final word on this, so what do you think, Grandmaster B?

If the Lead Artist agrees, Celdecea, is it possible to rework the left one a little bit so it fits in a 32x32 sprite with no gaps in it? We could replace the ripped spikes by the one you made with no compatibility issues (see SD_SPIKES in config/sprite.def)

I edited your original spikes a bit, but my edit contains gaps which are not pretty:

Resizing it wasn't good either

Re: Spike graphics

I can produce a 32x32 with no gaps.  Would you prefer the spikes in back to be darker like the ripped ones?

Re: Spike graphics

Here are four different reworks at 32x32 pixels.  Which one looks better?  Are there features from more than one I should try to combine?

Re: Spike graphics

Let's see what others think. I like 2, but the aliasing between the spikes could be improved.

Re: Spike graphics

Well, I'm not quite sure. 1 and 2 are both pretty good, but I can't decide which is BETTER.

Re: Spike graphics

Celdecea i must say your skills are currently vastly improving day by day! Its a pleasure to see that smile

If i may you give a boost, here is a little trick i use very often...
Please take a look here:
http://www.pasteall.org/pic/2091

I only made a little stronger specular highlight for the spikes, usually a white line does the job. And i added a "edge" just to add some details. I did not change the sprite itself, i thought it makes more sense if you try it yourself if you like it wink

Edit: I like 3 and 4 the best.

Re: Spike graphics

Thank you, I'm always looking for little tips like the specular effect, which I've been doing with glow tools up until now.

Here is what I got so far:

spikes_current.png

This comes with a slightly brighter highlight and more definition between the spikes.

Re: Spike graphics

Cant realy see a difference, maybe this was a bad example because the sprite is already very bright you may try darken it a bit first. Sorry my fault.

What graphics programs are you using? Im using Photoshop Elemements, Paint Shop Pro or GIMP (cant currently decide which is better suited), have you tried the doge/burn tools for shading?

Re: Spike graphics

I use two versions of Fireworks, MX 2004 for most work and CS4 for some path chopping.  I have Photoshop CS3 installed but no interest in using it.

I've emailed the originals for the spike graphics in MX2004 format to an email address which starts with "b".  Feel free to apply some finishing, I try to never assume I know everything about art.

Well don't be afraid to show me what you mean.  What if I had one eye and the other one had 2nd degree chemical burns causing me to see all reds as indigos?  You'd never know!
