Well that's bad news. Allegro4 needs to be Allegroforked.
As long as there's a compatibility maintenance for the older allegro I wouldn't mind.
Achievements are these unrewardable 'awards' that are collected once ever, it's a cheap attempt at replay value in today's games.
how does dreamcast compare to pentium 3?:)
I'd say the Dreamcast is on-par with a PII 450 with a TNT2 when it comes to performance and features. Delusioned DC fans strongly believe otherwise though (especially in the homebrew scene)
That is an intresting view. Nintendo has this policy of fangames that they allow them as long as they're free.
Not an official view, that's the fan-assumed one. The blind leading the blind if you ask me. Nintendo isn't bright on fangames.
The issue here is OpenSonic is GNU GPL which strictly allows commercial redistribution, anything that forcibly isn't is violating the GPL, so this is a problem. Even if you're not selling it.
Allegro's on DOS, so why not a DOS port compiled with DJGPP?
Benefits:
- !
Problems:
- 16-bit/32-bit color in DOS isn't known to be fast. 8-bit and a single (post-calculated from level/sprite load?) palette would be used for performance.
- No one uses DOS anymore.
For 32X ripping all I can think of is Gens KMod.
If that would happen, it'd just have the OS confuse them as treated as written documents. If one wanted to open them (in Windows), a double-click, then associating it to Notepad in the Open With... dialog would be enough.
Why not just have a diff file posted here instead? Granting SVN commit access is a serious task of trust consideration.
I think the first level should start on a landlocked polluted region in night time with sad music.
That is a HUGE 39mb .it file.
Isn't it already portable without needing an instal? What's the point?
For comfortable contribution you could have grid boxes for enforced consistency on those sprite sheets.
I don't like that one as much as this, it's 224kb and it's very faithful to the original song:

Bigger size doesn't always mean better.
Music taken from old Amiga games
4 channels of 8363hz samples isn't consistent with your 32-bit aim.
Pentium III is a very fast CPU. Why not take some 5th or 6th generation processor (Pentium, Pentium II) and test for that? You're already using Allegro, you can still aim for that limited setup.
He's replacing ripped content, so original compositions are probably most likely preferred. Be careful with samples too, they can be copyrighted data as well. Maybe it'll be fine to sample from a Yamaha FM chip.
legally speaking, it's a free use of a trademark.
Unauthorized use when the GPL license comes into mind if you intend to have the data under that. GPL strictly allows commercial selling.
then it would not be open sonic.
It can still be Sonic, gameplay-wise. It just wouldn't be infringesonic, and have even bigger release outlets than a usual fan game when you're going for the Ubuntu/Debian Free repositories. ![]()
At that point you might as well call it something else that doesn't involve the Sonic trademark, if you want to get serious with original contributions. Sonic fan communities are some of the worst to ask for that, because you'll just be fed recolors and derivative art with very strict "do not steal, credit me or tails will murder your family" licensing.
The first step of this is to conceptualize a non-stylized-hedgehog character that is made without the existence of any Sonic game in mind. Maybe an anime boy with rocket shoes, with a dragonfly having a mental illness.
And if anyone wanted Sonic in it, they would have some separately available Sonic replacement pack that would not be included with the game for legal reasons. This would not be in the software repositories, or even on Sourceforge.
Using Tux and his friends would be a horrible idea.
Agreed. Plus, Tux is short and fat and can not represent speed.
I suggested to use more simpler music, like ones with 8-10 channels only and slow pattern speeds with low frequency for samples. Dirty midi imports and slow processors do not go well together.
hehe you're WINE'ing MSpaint. KolourPaint not good for you? ![]()
You could also save some CPU power and memory by having more optimal music files with small samples and tight patterns. The MIDI->IT imports it is using now may be a bit of a strain for the ol' DreamCast, and don't take advantage of the format it uses anyway.
I do not know if any optimal alternatives for the current music exists, though. People rather MIDI than do tracker.
I heard one seascape .xm that sounds a lot like Chaotix though.
Well if it were say Hydrocity or Ice Cap with breakable walls, it'd be much more tedious to spindash through every wall that comes within pressure. It's one of the reasons why I loved playing Knuckles through Sonic3k.
